Religious Education

At Whyteleafe, we provide all of our children with an understanding of a broad range of religions and cultures which develops the children’s understanding of the world around them.  We feel it is important to ensure children are understanding of the diverse world that we live in today. We believe that RE provides an excellent opportunity to teach, discuss and reflect on living in a multicultural society. 

Our curriculum supports pupils to consider their own spiritual and moral values, questioning the meaning and purpose of life.  We encourage the children to look at real life artefacts and to discuss their own real life experiences of different religions.  Throughout their time at Whyteleafe, our children learn about a wide range of religions and cultures and how they make us unique and special and the importance of demonstrating respect for different beliefs.  As a result, our pupils are enabled to become accepting and tolerant individuals with a good understanding of the world they live in.

British values are taught through this curriculum area especially mutual respect and tolerance of those of different faiths and beliefs.  Children can discuss, debate, explore and discover in order to learn more about the world they live in.  

The Surrey Syllabus takes into account that Great Britain is traditionally Christian while also taking into account the teachings and practices of other principle religions.

Through our RE curriculum, we promote oracy by immersing the children in topic related vocabulary, encouraging children to use this language during independent work, we encourage collaborative learning within the classroom offering all children the opportunities to present their knowledge in a variety of ways.

Teachers assess the children against the National Curriculum objectives termly and knowledge and skills are built upon yearly.

By the end of Year 6, a Whyteleafe child will understand and take into consideration a number of different religions, making them more understanding of the world around them.  Children will be able to reflect on their own personal views and be able to explain their views.
